AR Poetry

An AR poem is a work of poetry with a layer of augmented reality that alters the meaning of the text. A poem, projected on a wall, or printed in a book, or displayed on a screen, can be viewed through a device, and blanks left in the original text are filled in, thus altering the text, and – more importantly – the meaning of the poem.

By opening the web-viewer (in the link) and pointing it at the poem on the screen, an extra layer of text is added to the poem, inviting the reader to step into a parallel reality in which universal truths are questioned, new epistemologies are proposed, and viewpoints are altered.

The project is inspired by Donna Haraway’s Situated Knowledges, where she critiques the notion of a single, objective truth and proposes instead a model of “situated,” plural, and accountable knowledge. The form of AR poetry itself is made to hold multiple truths at once, and invites a pluralism of viewpoints, instead of one absolute truth. More than that, AR poems are easily situated in the real world, while at the same time keeping enough distance to be able to reflect on that world.

    Augmented Poetry

I’ve created the first prototype of an augmented poem: poetry with a layer of augmented reality(AR) that alters the meaning of the text.
